Another soldier was confirmed dead and eight others were injured in the Boko Haram ambush that led to the death of B.U. Umar, a lieutenant colonel.
Investigations revealed that the officer identified as Lt. Col. B. Umar was killed on Monday while leading the troops of the 114 Tank Battalion from Gwoza to Yola. They were ambushed on Tuesday by Boko Haram sect on the road between Bita and Piridang.
It was gathered that Umar’s vehicle stepped on a mine and when he came out to inspect the damage, some insurgents opened fire on him and other soldiers.
It was further learnt that the troops returned fire and killed an unspecified number of the terrorists.
While Mr. Umar died immediately during the attack, another soldier, a lieutenant (name witheld) died of bullet wounds hours later.
However, the army has continued to keep mute on the attack and is yet to release any statement on the attack.
Tuesday’s attack occurs about a week after another lieutenant colonel, Muhammed Abu-Ali, and his troops were killed in another ambush by Boko Haram.
Fourteen Boko Haram insurgents and four other soldiers died in that attack, the army had said.
The attacks by the Boko Haram have continued despite ongoing negotiation with the federal government.
