A chieftain of the All Progressives Congress in Ondo State, Abayomi Adesanya, has called on President Muhammadu Buhari and the National Assembly to review and amend Section 308 of the 1999 Constitution which provides immunity for the President, Vice-President, Governor and Deputy Governor from facing prosecution while in office.
Speaking in an interview with our correspondent on Saturday, Adesanya said the clause had done more harm than good to Nigeria.
The APC chieftain said the immunity clause had also given room for criminals to perpetrate evil agenda against the country.
Adesanya said for the President to make any meaningful progress in fighting corruption, the Section 308 of the 1999 Constitution must be removed.
He said, “The immunity clause (Section 308) is an evil legacy bequeathed by the maximum ruler and former Head of State, late Gen. Sanni Abacha, who had wanted to perpetuate himself as life President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. The clause also has anti-democratic tendencies; it aids corruption and criminality. It should either be reviewed to exclude crimes and corruption, or be expunged completely.”
