A Lagos High Court, Ikeja, on Thursday sentenced a 24-year-old bus conductor, Toyin Rilwan, to 21 years imprisonment for armed robbery.
Justice Sedotan Ogunsanya handed down the verdict after finding the conductor guilty of a two-count charge of conspiracy and armed robbery.
Ogunsanya, while delivering her judgment, said: “The prosecution was able to prove beyond reasonable doubt that the defendant conspired with another person to rob one Alhaja Rasheedat Irawo.
“In view of Section 295 (2) of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, the defendant is sentenced to 21 years imprisonment with effect from August 25, 2012.”
Rilwan’s counsel, Mr. O. Ajanaku, in his plea for mitigation of sentence, urged the court to have mercy on the defendant.
“The defendant is a very young man. I pray that the defendant be given a new shot at life.
“He had been reformed in custody and can still be very useful to the society,” the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) quoted the counsel as saying in court.
