Fire disaster in Benue, over 20 houses destroyed

Over 20 houses were set ablaze by armed men who attacked Naka community, in Benue state.

Benue State government confirmed the attack on Naka, Gwer LGA, through the Special Adviser to the Governor on Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Titus Zam said the attack followed,”the act of lawlessness perpetrated by some restive youths in Gwer-West Local Government Area of Benue State.”

Zam said the action of the youths led to the unfortunate death of an officer of the Nigerian Army who was on official assignment in the area. He expressed sympathy with the Nigerian Army over the unfortunate development and appealed to the military to restrain from ongoing reprisals leading to the burning of several houses in Naka town as two wrongs could not make a right. Assuring the military that the state government was determined to handle the situation in a manner that justice would be done on both sides and prayed for the repose of the fallen soldier.

He reiterated that the armed herdsmen were the common enemy who must be jointly fought and defeated; he called for calm and peaceful co-existence between people of Gwer-West and the Military.
