The Corps Marshal, Federal Road Safety Corps, Mr. Boboye Oyeyemi, has urged the Federal Government to check the importation of used and substandard tyres in the country.
He stated that such tyres popularly called tokunboh tyres were not safe and had contributed to the loss of many lives and destruction of billions of naira worth of property during road crashes.
Oyeyemi, who was represented by the Deputy Corp Marshal, Training, Standardisation and Certification, Mr. Ademola Lawal, spoke during the FRSC’s sensitisation rally on tyre usage in Ilorin, the Kwara State
Capital, stated that the rally was to sensitise Nigerian road users to the dangers of not using the right tyres on their vehicles.
He said, “Tokunboh tyres are not suitable for anybody to use. They are not suitable for any car and it is not suitable to be imported into the country. They are tyres that have been dumped in the countries of their origin. Somebody removed them from his own car and dumped them for proper disposal and our people went there, packed them and put them into the container and shipped them here.
“They are not worth using. That is why we are now carrying the sensitisation to the nooks and crannies of the country. We should control the importation of tyres into the country. Importation of substandard tyres should be discouraged.”
The Kwara State Sector Commander, FRSC, Mr. Sunday Maku, said good engine and motion depended on tyres.
