Kano Pillars striker Junior Lokosa has emerged the first winner of the Eunisell Boot Award.
The colourful presentation ceremony took place on Thursday at the Radisson Blu, Ikeja, Lagos. The Nigeria Professional Football League top scorer was awarded the prestigious trophy and N3.8m – N200,000 for each of his 19 goals scored during the 2017/18 NPFL season.
Initiated by global chemical and specialty fluid management company, Eunisell, the award celebrates the highest goal scorer in the Nigerian domestic topflight.
“I never dreamt of this; I never believed this could happen. When I first read the news in the papers, I felt, ‘will this happen?’ But I got a call from the organisers and I knew it was real,” Lokosa said after he was presented with the award.
“I joined the NPFL about a year-and-a-half ago, and here I am. I have played for the national team as well; thanks to my mum, her prayers have kept me going. I also thank my family, Kano Pillars and the fans.”
The 25-year-old added, “I am overwhelmed by Eunisell’s determination to change the status of Nigerian footballers. It is a big challenge for all of us in the league and we must keep improving so that other companies will emulate what Eunisell is doing.”
Speaking at the event, Group Managing Director of Eunisell Limited, Chika Ikenga, said, “Football is Eunisell’s main corporate social responsibility because we know that it creates opportunities for our youths and nurtures their talents. Importantly, it allows them to fulfil their dreams.”
There are many success stories of our footballers who have gone on to become stars both in Nigeria and overseas.
“But for that to continue and grow, the game requires corporate Nigeria to get behind it. The Eunisell Boot Award for the top scorer was conceived to provide a solution for that challenge. This explains why we have valued each goal at N200,000.”
