Factional National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Senator Ali Modu Sheriff, has insisted that Hon. Matthew Iduoriyekemwen remains the party’s governorship candidate for the September 10 governorship election in Edo State.
This is even as he met with the reconciliation committee constituted by the party’s Board of Trustees (BoT) to reconcile aggrieved members of the PDP.
The committee headed by former Minister of Information, Professor Jerry Gana, met with the factional chairman at his office in Maitama District of Abuja.
The meeting began by 9 p.m., the outcome was still being awaited at press time. But Sheriff, who spoke when he hosted a delegation of women from Edo State, who came to thank him for the party’s choice of Mrs. Herberta Okonufua as governorship running mate, noted that an Abuja Division of Federal High Court had ruled that he is the only one, who will submit governorship candidate to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for Edo and Ondo states.
His words: “The court also said that starting from the date of last convention, May 21, in Port Harcourt, any document signed by (Senator Ahmed) Makarfi is illegal, null and void. So, I don’t know why they are deceiving Nigerians.” The factional chairman noted that the Supreme Court had made a declaration, where someone who did not run for election became a governor in River State.
He stated Nigeria is a country ruled by law, adding that unless the Nigerian constitution is changed overnight, Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu, who was produced by the National Caretaker Committee is wasting his time.
“If Pastor Ize-Iyamu likes it, let him campaign from now to a thousand years to come, the governorship candidate for Edo State is Matthew Iduoriyekemwen, nothing can stand on nothing. There is no basis for his candidacy. He cannot come from non-existing caretaker committee and rush to say I’ve come to become a candidate of PDP.”
