The Nigerian police have arrested the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) officer who fired the shot that killed Joseph Eidonojie-Ugbeni, a Business Administration student of a polytechnic in Edo State.
The 20-year-old student was reportedly killed by a stray bullet fired by a Mobile policeman at the Ogoja Market, LASU-Igando Road, Lagos State when the security operatives were chasing a suspected Internet fraudster, known as Badoo.
The student had reportedly visited his cousins, who lived on Alape Street, Iba Ojo when he was hit by a stray bullet on his way to get a canned drink with his cousin.
A legal practitioner and friend of the victim’s family, Saheed Sanni, said the family had decided to petition the Inspector-General of Police in the case to demand justice for the victim.
The Police Public Relations Officer, SP Dolapo Badmos, said the case had been transferred to the homicide section of the State Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department for discreet investigation.
She said, “The state Commissioner of Police, Fatai Owoseni, has directed that the case be investigated by the homicide section. We will come out with the full report at the conclusion of investigation.”
