In an unforeseen twist, the #SaveMayowa campaign making rounds on social media, has been ousted as a scam.
Mayowa Ahmed who is said to be suffering from Ovarian cancer took to Twitter to ask Nigerians to help her raise $100,000 for treatment abroad.
Actress, Toyin Aimakhu, a major proponent of the #SaveMayowa campaign, that raised over $100k equivalent to N32 Million in a matter of days, has cried out over the rumour.
According to the actress, the whole issue was a scam run by Mayowa Ahmed’s family.
“They tagged me, she sent a message to me… they said she’s my huge fan saying she had cancer and she needed help and wanted me to come… I showed the doctor the (medical) report and the doctor said ‘which report?’. They said it was a fake report, ” she said.
Toyin also stated further that “They just came up with the plan on Sunday. They now came to LUTH to appear as if they were in LUTH. When they saw me they said I did not help them to beg for money… that they don’t know anything.”
Mayowa’s family had claimed that doctors at the Lagos University Teaching Hospital referred her to a hospital abroad, a claim which has now been debunked.
Sources tell us that two of Mayowa’s brothers have been picked up by men of the Nigerian police.
