Defending champions of the Zenith Bank Women’s Basketball League, Dolphins, on Sunday booked their place in the semifinals of the Final 8 Playoffs of the league after defeating IGP Queens 74-66 at the Indoor Sports hall of the National Stadium, Lagos.
Dolphins, who thrashed Delta Force 83-65 in their first match on Saturday, trailed the IGP Queens in the first three quarters of the game but came out in the fourth quarter to win the match. IGP Queens started strongly, shooting into the lead to finish the first quarter 23-19.
But Dolphins came back into the game to reduce the tally. They finished at half time with a deficit of five points – 40-35. The third quarter saw the strongest rally from the Queens and they finished 60-48 to establish a 12-point lead.
Three successive three-point throw from Juliet Currency reduced the deficit for Dolphins in the last quarter as the defending champions came from behind to win the game.
Coach of the side, Ochuko Okworogun, told our correspondent that the game was won from the technical angle.
“I told them at the end of the third quarter that they should go into the game and block all those shots from the girls who were scoring for the Queens and that was done,” she said.
“We are taking each game as it comes as we work towards the title defence.”
Dolphins will continue their defence on Monday when they play Plateau Rocks in their last group match.
In other matches, Delta Force lost Plateau Rocks 58-54 while Benue Princesses beat AHIP Queens 62-47.
